UK Pensions Decoded For Expats
Being an expat in the UK means there are 100’s of things that are new and that you need to organise. The bureaucracy is… testing to say the least.
You know that pensions are important. That’s why you’re contributing every month through work, you think. But if a friend were to ask you over coffee if you’re on a path to enough money in retirement, you wouldn’t be able to fully answer it.
Your eyes glaze over as soon as anyone brings up gross vs net contributions, salary sacrifice or reclaiming through self assessment. And you secretly wonder if those are even relevant for you as you don’t know how long you’ll stay in the UK anyway. So you keep putting it off and are missing out on tax breaks year after year.
This is exactly why I created this deep dive. By investing 60 minutes, you’ll know exactly how to make this system work for you, have an easy to follow step-by-step checklist and know you can live the life you want in retirement.

This might sound familiar
British pensions simply are complicated, and I get that the thought of having to figure it all out makes you overwhelmed in a way that you can physically feel. I’ve felt that way about many things when I moved here. It can make things feel a bit shaky because your support network here isn’t as big as it is back home.
Although the information is in English, at times it feels like it might as well be written in ancient Greek, and it’s not like you’ve got a relative living in this country you can ask for help. So you just do what you did and keep hoping that you’ll be fine.
And besides, you tell yourself, your life is pretty comfortable right now. Frankly, it doesn’t feel like a ‘right now’ problem and there are more urgent fires to put out. So this goes in the ‘denial’ section in your brain until you finally ‘will have time’.
I hate to break it to you, but that ‘extra free time’ is not going to come. And whilst you keep putting it off, you’re missing out on valuable years of making your money work for you. Years that can make the difference between comfortable retirement and wondering how you’re going to make ends meet once you stop working. Even if you end up moving to a different country.

If you’re saying to yourself “I’ll deal with pensions later’, this is for you.
What if I told you that getting on top of your pension this year will be one of the strongest wealth building moves you can make? One that doesn’t need you to work harder or make more money.
Going all in on my pension early on is one of the main reasons I become work optional at 35. I could do that, because my university degree taught me about pensions. So I knew to jump in right away.
If you don’t have a MSc in tax or a Diploma for Financial Advisors, it’s unlikely anyone every sat you down and taught you this stuff. Let alone about UK pensions if you didn’t grow up here. And it’s not like the information about it is easy to compile or digest. Which I still think is absurd. Everybody should have access to knowing this!
How would it feel when you know you’ll be able to do the things you love the most in retirement, without having to make ends meet? To know you can still afford the lifestyle you have today, because you took action today?
That’s why I designed this 1 hour deep dive, in plain easy-to-understand English, to clear away the financial fog and demystify all the jargon that is impossible to pronounce in the first place.
It’s time to give your pension the love it deserves.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re employed in the UK, and you’d struggle if a friend asked you over coffee to explain the pensions system to her, these are the sessions for you.
Especially when you’ve moved from abroad, or just had a major plot twist hurled at you (divorce, being single again), getting on top of your pension is one of the most important things to build financial stability.
-
Not entirely.
The UK legislation you deal with is the same, and so are the basics of how pensions work.
During the expat session we spend more time looking at tax systems if you’ve just moved, or thinking about moving away again, as well as taking our time with the different document types and processes that might feel very foreign.
-
No, definitely not.
Each session focusses on the specific legislation and ways to optimise your tax breaks of that country. So the UK session will focus purely on what’s relevant to the UK, and the NL one will focus on what is relevant for the Netherlands.
-
This is financial education and guidance.
I don’t know enough about your personal situation to give you advice. Nobody who teaches does.
Instead, I’m giving you the tools, knowledge and checklists to make your own decisions. Not just now, but also in the future. -
Yes, the sessions are recorded and all sign ups receive a link to the recording.
-
Yes! That’s the main reason I keep these groups small and limit the number of seats per deep dive.
You’ll be sent a link to a form where you can input your questions about 10 days before the deep dive.
Additionally, I always leave time at the end to take questions.
-
The sessions are in English.
-
No, you do not.
Personal finance and money can feel highly private. So to respect everyone’s privacy you won’t be visible to others joining the deep dive.
You do have access to the live chat during the session.

Hi, I’m Laura, founder of Elevate
Financial freedom isn’t about showing off.
It’s about not lying awake at night worrying about money and having the power to create a life that truly makes you happy. Pensions are a key part in achieving that.
In fact, going all in on my pension early on is one of the main things that allowed me t become work optional at 35.
When I got divorced, I realised how rare it is for women to feel truly financially independent. But because I already understood how to manage my money, I was able to rebuild a life on my terms; choosing happiness, security, and freedom.
That’s the confidence I want for you.
When I moved from the Netherlands to the UK and got to experience all the joys of learning a new financial system, I decided that us women who’ve been through a plot twist need better support and information.
So I started Elevate to help women who’ve had to start over, due to moving country, divorce, widowhood or a combination of those things build a financial plan that not just lets them live their new life, but thrive.
I have a MSc in Fiscal Economics, built and sold a business, became financially free/work optional at 35 and am on my way to complete my Diploma for Advanced Financial Advisors (DipFA) in 2026.
In this deep dive, you’ll go from ‘Pensions are boring and complicated’ to ‘Pensions are going to be my secret weapon ’.
Trust me, once we’re at the end of it, you’ll wonder what actually took you so long to get started.
Don’t miss out. The last thing you want is to miss out on another year of making your money work for you.
Can’t wait to see you there!
